October 2017: Holstein NI raises £34,000 for regional neonatal unit

Cheque 2

Consultant neonatologist Dr Richard Tubman, centre, treasurer of the Perinatal Trust Fund at RMH Regional Neonatal Unit receives a cheque for £34,000 from Holstein NI members, Gareth and Judith Smyth, and twin sons Wallace and Austin, Cloughmills; chairman Tommy Henry, and secretary/treasurer John Martin.

Holstein Northern Ireland has presented a cheque for £34,000 to the Perinatal Trust Fund at the Royal Victoria Hospital’s regional Neonatal Unit in Belfast.

The money was raised at the club’s second annual open day and stockjudging event hosted earlier this year by the Smyth family’s Ballyweaney Herd at Cloughmills.

Consultant neonatologist Dr Richard Tubman, treasurer of the Perinatal Trust Fund said: “This is a fantastic amount of money, and one of the biggest donations we have received in the charity’s 30-year history.

“We don’t get funding from the NHS. The Perinatal Trust fund facilitates the purchase of vital medical equipment and staff training, and relies solely on the public’s support and voluntary donations.

“This phenomenal cheque will go a long way towards purchasing specialist equipment such as incubators and ventilators for the neonatal unit.”

Based at the Royal Maternity Hospital in Belfast, the regional neonatal unit has 24 cots and is one of the largest specialist baby units in the UK. The state-of-the-art intensive care facility treats premature and sick babies from throughout Northern Ireland, and its medical professionals are responsible for more than 500 admissions annually.

Holstein NI chairman Tommy Henry said: “This year’s open day far exceeded our initial expectations, and on behalf of the club, it gives me great pleasure to present this cheque to the Perinatal Trust Fund.

“I’d like to thank the Smyth family, Mervyn, May, Gareth and Judith, their friends, club members and everyone who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to contribute to the success of the open day. Thanks also to our sponsors Ecosyl from Volac and Lacpatrick.”

Open Day hosts Gareth and Judith Smyth are the proud parents of twin sons Wallace and Austin. Born almost 16 weeks premature, the boys spent the first few months of their lives in intensive care incubators at the regional neonatal unit.

“Wallace and Austin were born on New Years Day 2016 weighing 1lb 10ozs and 1lb 8ozs. It was a difficult and emotional journey for the whole family, but thanks to the excellent facilities and specialist care provided by the medical team, they are miracle babies,” said Gareth.

“The open day was a huge success, and we have been overwhelmed by the generosity and support for the Perinatal Trust Fund – a charity very close to our hearts! A sincere thank you to everyone who donated items for the charity auction and raffle, sent donations and attended the open day.”

May 2016: Can NI Dairy Farmers help themselves to a better milk price?

•Current milk price crisis caused by 2.5% production increase in Europe during 2015.
•EU commission has said they will support a voluntary reduction in supply.
•Cutting back in NI will reduce milk going into Intervention which will lift average price.
•We are lobbying for compensation for farmers to reduce output.
•Farmers increased production on the advice from leaders in the industry. They were told to become more efficient which required investment. The Agri - Food strategy policy was signed off by government where the plan was to increase output dramatically across all sectors with no regard as to the effect additional production would have on prices.
•We are proposing that farmers cut back 5% from the corresponding month in 2015.
•If the industry collectively would lobby each member state for compensation we believe we can make a very strong case.
•We propose that in NI we ask for 20ppl for the milk not produced for a minimum of 3 months. This would cost £2million/month to compensate every Dairy farmer in NI for a 5% reduction. Small change also when one considers the profits of some successful processors.
•When you consider the jobs associated with every single farmer and the negative value of tax intake from unprofitable farms, this would represent a very sound investment for government towards the industry.
•Barriers to the scheme have been placed by farmer representatives. We would like to survey farmers as to whether or not they want to be price takers or makers. This is farmers  opportunity to take control of their future.

What happens if we don't follow any initiative?

•In time the supply / demand balance will re-adjust. This will happen when farmers go out of business.
•We believe that those who will suffer first are young farmers who have invested in their future. Not necessarily the least efficient.
•We also believe that those who remain will be burdened with considerable debt for many years adding 3-4ppl on to their costs of production.
We would like farmers to be in a position to produce what the market wants when it is needed. If they have gone out of business they won't be able to produce it.

We are now in the position where we need to establish, do farmers want to help themselves? If you do, then we will do all in our power to make that happen.

Judging of Holstein NI's annual herds inspection is well underway. Sponsors Peter O'Hara and Margaret Courtney from Ulster Bank, are pictured with chairman Stuart Smith, and vice-chairman John Berry. Prizes will be presented at a BBQ in Dungannon Rugby Club on Thursday evening 25th June.

Judging of Holstein herds inspection competition is nearing completion

Judging of Holstein NI’s annual herds inspection competition, sponsored by Ulster Bank, is well underway.

Club secretary John Martin has reported an increased level of entries with almost 70 herds taking part in the competition. “The herds inspection competition is growing in popularity, and I am delighted at the number of new entrants taking part in this year’s competition.”

County Fermanagh breeder William Crawford from the Ardmore herd in Brookeborough, has completed his whistle-stop tour of Northern Ireland, visiting junior entrants in the competition.

The senior herds have come under scrutiny from retired breeder Robert Wallace, Templepatrick, County Antrim.

Judging will be completed next week when Scottish herd owner Brian Weatherup Snr from Fife, will visit entrants in the premier section.

Holstein NI chairman Stuart Smith said “We are indebted to Ulster Bank for its continued sponsorship of this hotly contested competition. This year we have attracted a significant number of new entrants, and I am sure the judges will inspect many excellent herds with outstanding individual animals.”

“The competition continues to attract an unprecedented number of entrants, and that’s why we’ve opted to select a separate judge for each category - junior, senior and premier. The task is so big that it would be impossible for one man to do it alone.”

“Finally, thanks to our judges William Crawford, Robert Wallace and Brian Weatherup Snr who have kindly agreed to give up their time to judge the 2015 competition.”

The presentation of awards will take place at a BBQ in Dungannon Rugby Club on Thursday 25th June at 8pm. Anyone interested in attending the event should book in advance with club secretary John Martin on mobile 07711 041128.
